169 Tons of Cultural Heritage in the Air: BMS Lifts Historic Dock Gate in Copenhagen

In September 2025, a key part of Denmark’s maritime history was lifted from its position near the Opera House in Copenhagen. The 169-ton dock gate, originally built in the 1850s, was due for restoration – a task requiring a highly specialised technical setup.

Coordinated Lift with 3 Mobile Cranes

After being transported by floating crane, the dock gate was moved to Containervej, where BMS, together with its sister company Skaks, took over the lifting operation. Three mobile cranes at 400, 450 and 650-ton were used in a carefully planned lift, allowing the gate to be rotated mid-air and safely placed into a waiting coaster.

Restoration and Return

The gate has now been shipped to Grenaa, where it will undergo extensive restoration, including corrosion protection, sandblasting, and repairs to the steel structure. Once completed, it will be shipped back to Copenhagen and reinstated into active operation – stronger than ever and with full respect for its historic value.
